Painful dreams

Why do people slap/pinch/punch themselves to see whether they are dreaming? (at least in movies) Can we experience pain while dreaming?

Well I think the answer is yes. Cos I had a dream a few days ago, in which I was undergoing a blood test. The nurse used a penknife on me instead of an autoclick, and it was erms...painful...

Come to think of it, if we can perceive sight and sound in dreams, why not pain?

i dreamt of touching a hot pan and it was painful too. I guess it's not we cannot feel pain in a dream, but inflicting pain prob can wake someone up?

err... i'm friend of ya sis's friend....

i'm +ve we can "feel" when we're dreaming. but regarding sounds.... i ain't sure about that man. but what i'm sure is... we will tend to 4get what we're dreaming. even if we do remember, we will 4get certain aspects of it... like if there's sound, there's pain, the exact details of the entire dream, etc. afterall, there are a few cycles in which REM occurs. and that's when dreams occur. if we wake up after REM, most likely we won't remember the dreams...

hmm... come to thinkof it, i don't know why i'm writing this. just being bored i guess. :P
